Non primary cancer

The National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) supports NHS England to improve data collected on cancer recurrence, progression and transformations.

Introduction

As cancer treatments and survival improve there has been a growing interest in the recurrence, progression or transformation of cancer. The time between treatment and recurrence is becoming an increasingly important measure of the success of initial treatments and the quality of life of those living with and beyond cancer.

NDRS is committed to supporting NHS England to improve data collection on all patients whose disease has recurred, progressed or transformed.

Non primary cancer data

Non primary cancers is an umbrella term for recurrences, progressions and transformations.

NDRS has access to:

  • non primary cancer records as a submitted part of the Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD)
  • treatment for recurrences, progressions and transformations from the Cancer Waiting Times (CWT) treatment data set for diagnosed cancer patients.

Using this information NDRS can then provide a count of the number of patients with a non primary cancer, broken down at hospital trust level.

With the goal of improving data collection on non primary cancers, tracking this data also helps the NHS to understand whether hospital trusts are submitting the non primary cancer data and where improvements on data submission may need to be made.

Find out more and download the data tables detailing the number of non primary cancers including recurrences reported at hospital trust level using both the COSD and CWT data sets.
