Find out about NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) releases.

Release 15.9 – 30 September 2025 (subject to final testing)

This update will introduce system background changes to support the running and development of e-RS. These will not impact end users.

Release 15.8 – 23 September 2025

1. Updates to the e-RS screens for Service Definer users

Screen layout changes for service definer users when maintaining and creating services will be updated. These changes are being made to improve the experience of our users and to ensure e-RS meets the required accessibility standards; ensuring the service is accessible to all users.

It is recommended for service definers to review the information on the e-RS website. A video of the awareness session covering the changes in more details can be viewed here

Release 15.7 – 16 September 2025

1. Increase the character limit on Advice and Guidance requests and responses

To provide more comprehensive and clinically useful information in a single response without needing to truncate or omit important details, the character limit on Advice and Guidance (A&G) requests and responses has been increased from 2000 to 8000 characters.

2. Additional UBRNs

Previously when providers were reviewing an advice or referral request there was no indication if there were any other UBRNs for the patient. To check they needed to exit the screen and use the patient enquiry to identify any additional UBRNs for the patient. With this system update, the Advice Request Details and Review Referral Summary screens now indicate whether there are any active advice requests or referrals, or not for this patient.

When reviewing an advice and guidance or referral request, a message about additional UBRNs is displayed at the bottom left corner of the screen. Please be aware that users will only be notified about UBRNs that they are able to find using a Patient Enquiry.

Release 15.6 - 22 August 2025

1. Spell check option

To support accessibility and inclusivity, and to save users time, the right mouse click browser spell check option has been enabled from any free text field.

If you access e-RS through EMIS, right-click and spell check won't work. This is due to a limitation in EMIS and is not something e-RS can control.

2. Defect fixes

The following areas were fixed in this release:

Service definers

a) When authenticated into e-RS as a service definer user and selecting the ‘Additional Requirements’ tab, the user is displayed the Service Locations associated to the user with the NACS Organisation Code in brackets after the service name.
