Part of Birth Notification Application guide for maternity
Accessing the Birth Notification Application
This is part 3 of the Birth Notification Application (BNA) guide for maternity.
Summary
This is part 3 of the Birth Notification Application (BNA) guide for maternity.
The Birth Notification Application (BNA) is accessed through the National Care Records Service (NCRS) using the existing NHS Care Records Service smartcard functionality.
If you wish to access the BNA you must have an NHS Smartcard, access to the NCRS and also the following role and activity code on your smartcard for your particular organisation:
Role | R8016 (midwife) |
Activity codes | B0264 - Access NCRS (perform patient trace) B1610 - Allocate NHS Number |
Please note that your smartcard must be inserted into the smartcard reader for the BNA to function. If you remove the smartcard the NCRS (and the BNA) will be closed down.
After inserting the NHS Smartcard you will be required to enter your PIN. You will be asked to select the job role you require (but only if you have more than one job role on your smartcard). If you only have one job role then this will be selected automatically. You will now be able to access the NCRS.
