Part of Using RStudio in the NHS England Secure Data Environment
Copy and pasting code into SDE
You can copy and paste small amounts of code into the SDE. This functionality is intended to be used to paste small amounts of code into the environment to enable more efficient working.
If you paste in more than 1KB of data (around 1,000 characters) an alert will be triggered to the SDE service team. The team will then contact you to ask about the nature of the code you are pasting and may ask you to provide evidence to support this activity.
The capability to bring in larger amounts of code for use within the SDE is something that is planned for the future.
The copy/paste icon is in the top toolbar of the virtual desktop.
Google Chrome
You can paste directly into the tool you are using in SDE when using Google Chrome. However, if you are unable to paste using Chrome you may need to grant Chrome permission to do so by toggling the Clipboard slider to the allow position as shown in the screenshot below.
Microsoft Edge
You can paste directly into the tool you are using in SDE when using Microsoft Edge. However, if you are unable to paste you may need to grant permission to do so by selecting Allow from the Clipboard drop-down allow as shown in the screenshot below.
Mozilla Firefox and Safari
Mozilla Firefox and Safari do not allow direct pasting into the environment. However, you can use the environment’s clipboard function to paste into SDE.
To copy and paste code into SDE:
1. Click on the copy/paste icon at the top of your SDE desktop.
The Paste to remote session dialogue box will appear.
2. Press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on mac) to paste the copied content into the dialog box.
The dialog box will disappear.
You can now paste the copied content into which ever file or notebook you require within SDE.
