Part of Recording patients on extended Section 17 leave
Summary of changes to guidance
When a patient goes on extended S17 leave (linked to a legal judgment, for example MM), commissioners will need to:
- Ensure the current open record on AT is up to date to reflect the position before the patient goes on extended S17 leave.
- Close the existing record, with Date of Closure of Record Q49 being the date the patient went on extended S17 leave.
- Open a new record with most details the same as the closed record, to cover the period when the patient is on extended S17 leave.
- Maintain the record – minimal updating should be required whilst the patient remains on leave.
If a patient on extended S17 leave is recalled to hospital and remains there, the commissioner will need to:
- Close the existing record that reflects the period of leave, with Date of Closure of Record Q49 being the date the patient came back into hospital.
- Open a new record with most details the same as the previous record for their return to hospital.
