For activity from April 2024 onwards there are two national data collections relevant to UECMH activity

  1. The mental health services data (MHSDS) is the main dataset into which activity for all UEC MH services should flow data.
  2. A new national Urgent Mental Health Helplines (NHS111-MH) data collection has been established to gather specific data items on call handling performance directly from NHS-commissioned crisis lines. The data will help ensure services are meeting the needs of those in crisis while supporting continuous improvement and will enable greater consistency and transparency across systems, ensuring high quality and timely care is delivered to everyone accessing support through NHS 111.

A National Patient Experience Survey has been established to capture feedback from individuals who access local crisis care support via the NHS 111 ‘select mental health option’.

NHS Management Information on activity

A range of relevant information, resources and data for local systems can be found via the  Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism Resource Hub  ( you will need a FutureNHS account to login).

Of relevance are three dashboards:

These have been developed to support health systems to review and assure activity, identify opportunities for improvement and identify other systems that they may be able to learn from.

Published data

Data on waits for urgent and very urgent referrals to crisis care teams and waits for referrals to liaison psychiatry for A&E are also published monthly through Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics and quarterly via the NHS Mental Health Dashboard. A range of data on suicide is available on Public Health England’s Fingertips profiles

To support a focus on improving data quality, NHS England have developed a publicly available Mental Health Services Dataset Data Quality Dashboard. This allows users to interrogate the completeness of data submitted to the dataset, including at provider level, for all of the data items.

The Access to Crisis Care via NHS 111 - Mental Health Statistics Dashboard provides time series data with data dating back to April 2024. The dashboard also includes data aggregated to England, Commissioning Region and Integrated Care Board level.

Currently, patient experience data collected through the NHS 111 ‘select mental health option’ survey is not formally published but is available on FutureNHS. We are in the process of developing a national dashboard that will provide providers and regions with actionable insights into the performance of their crisis services. Systems will be informed once the dashboard is live.
