Hip Replacements

The chart below shows the number of NHS funded hip replacement procedures carried out in hospitals, pre-operative questionnaires returned1 and post-operative questionnaires returned2.

  • There were 76,401 hip replacement procedures and 67,492 pre-operative questionnaires. This gives a headline participation rate of 88.3%, which is an increase from last year (85.7% in 2018-19).
  • Of the 67,492 pre-operative questionnaires, 49,237 successfully linked to a PROMs-eligible episode within HES giving a linkage rate of 73.0%. This is a decrease from 79.2% in 2018-19.
  • Patients returned 69.4% of the post-operative questionnaires they were sent, lower than the 2018-19 response rate of 71.0%
  • Of the total number of HES episodes, 35,937 successfully linked to both a pre- and post-operative questionnaire, giving an overall rate of 47.0%, a small decrease compared to the previous year 2018-19 (49.5%).

Knee Replacements

The chart below shows the number of NHS funded knee replacement procedures carried out in hospitals, pre-operative questionnaires returned1 and post-operative questionnaires returned2.

  • There were 90,309 knee replacement procedures and 79,803 pre-operative questionnaires. This gives a headline participation rate of 88.4%, which is an increase from last year (86.1% in 2018-19).
  • Of the 79,803 pre-operative questionnaires, 56,579 successfully linked to a PROMs-eligible episode within HES giving a linkage rate of 70.9%. This is a decrease from 76.8% in 2018-19.
  • Patients returned 67.8% of the post-operative questionnaires they were sent, slightly lower than the 2018/19 response rate of 68.6%
  • Of the total number of episodes found in HES, 41,319 successfully linked to both a pre- and post-operative questionnaire, giving an overall rate of 45.8%, a small increase compared to the previous year 2018/19 (47.1%).

Notes

1. Accredited Supplier Switchover

In 2017 following feedback received from both potential suppliers and from NHS trusts changes were made that allowed any organisation, either a supplier or a healthcare provider organisation could apply and submit PROMs data to NHS Digital.

Prior to this point there were only a handful of accredited suppliers of PROMS data one of which was Capita who ceased activities relating to providing accredited supplier activities to trusts from 01/01/2020. This has required a large number of providers to switch suppliers mid-year. We are aware that in a number of cases this transition process has resulted in the new supplier resubmitting pre-operative for a number of procedures that are due to occur post the accredited supplier switchover date for organisations. Leading to a possible inflation of participation rate figures. Investigation has shown this to have minimal effect on national level figures however DQ caveats have been added at provider level analyses to flag where this might be a factor in other statistical outputs disseminated at that level.

2. Impacts of COVID-19

Post-operative follow up questionnaires are issued 6 months following the procedure. This means that such follow up activities and subsequent returns for a number of procedures occurring in the latter half of 2019-20 period such as completion, return and processing will have occurred during a period where restrictions on movement and changes to behaviours could potentially have impacted upon response rate activity for this reporting period whereas this has not been a case in prior years.
