Hip Replacements
For the 76,401 hip replacement procedures, a majority of patients were 50 years old or older (94.0%). Patients aged 50-69 accounted for 42.3% compared to 51.7% for those over 70 years old.
59.4% of all hip replacements were carried out on female patients
40.6% were male patients
The chart below show the number of hip replacement procedures per 100,000 people by age and gender (from the mid-year 2019 population estimates). The chart shows a similar pattern for males and females, with the highest rate for both males and females being the 75-79 age group (732.9 per 100,000 for female and 496.7 per 100,000 for males).
Knee Replacements
There were 90,309 knee replacement procedures and almost all patients were 50 years old or older (97.5%). Patients aged 50-69 accounted for 45.6% whereas 51.9% for those over 70 years old.
56.1% of knee replacements were carried out on female patients
43.9% were male patients.
The chart below shows the number of knee replacement procedures per 100,000 people by age and gender (from the mid-year 2019 population estimates). As with hip replacements there is a similar pattern for males and females, with the highest rate for both males and females being the 75-79 age group (814.7 per 100,000 for female and 720.9 per 100,000 for males).
