Statistics on Women's Smoking Status at Time of Delivery: England Quarter 1, 2021-22

Women known to be smokers at time of delivery
Percentage known to be smokers by year
9.1% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 1 of 2021-2022.
This is a slight increase from 8.9% during quarter 4 of 2020-2021, but otherwise lower than any other previous quarter.
The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.
Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)
In quarter 1 of 2021-2022, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were in NHS North West London CCG (3.7%), NHS Herts Valleys CCG (4.0%), and NHS Trafford CCG (4.2%). NHS Portsmouth CCG recorded 0% but from only 14 recorded maternities (see DQ table 1).
7 CCGs had proportions above 15%. Those with the highest were NHS Blackpool CCG (23.7%), NHS North East Lincolnshire CCG (21.1%) and NHS Hull CCG (19.9%).
No data was received for NHS West Essex CCG or NHS Leeds CCG.

In quarter 1 of 2021-2022, 15 out of 104 submitting CCGs met the national ambition of 6% or less.
In the London NHS England region, it was achieved by all 5 CCGs, but only by 10 CCGs in total outside of London.
No data was received for NHS West Essex CCG or NHS Leeds CCG.
