Statistics on Women's Smoking Status at Time of Delivery: England, Quarter 1, 2022-23

Women known to be smokers at time of delivery
Percentage known to be smokers by year
8.9% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 1 of 2022-2023.
This is a decrease from 9.4% in the previous quarter (Q4 of 2021-2022).
The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.
Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board Location (Sub-ICB)
In quarter 1 of 2022-2023, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were in NHS North West London ICB - W2U3Z (3.6%), NHS Cheshire and Merseyside ICB - 02E (4.3%) and NHS Greater Manchester ICB - 02A (4.4%).
6 Sub-ICBs had proportions above 15%. Those with the highest were NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB - 03F (18.9%), NHS Cheshire and Merseyside ICB - 01F (18.4%) and NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB - 00R (16.9%).
Data was received from all Sub-ICBs for quarter 1.

Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board Location, compared with the national ambition
In quarter 1 of 2022-2023, 10 out of 106 submitting Sub-ICBs met the national ambition of 6% or less.
In the London NHS England region, it was achieved by 4 out of 5 Sub-ICBs, but only by 6 Sub-ICBs outside of London.
