GP Connect Utilisation Report (Power BI reports)
How can I use Power BI reports and dashboards to understand GP Connect activity and data for my locality?
GP Connect Power BI Reports are intended to provide data for provider and consumer support.
You can view national GP Connect activity and data (NHS England) using a range of parameters/variables and can filter by region, organisation type, appointment bookings and date.
The Power BI reports platform hosts a standardised suite of reports and dashboards. The reports, alongside the Appointment Checker, can be used to identify and pinpoint any issues that might need attention. This can help to build a picture of appointment slot availability and utilisation.

Where to start
Use Power BI to build a picture of your region, ICB, PCN, and to understand individual GP practice activity.
A suggested approach to using Power BI dashboards and making an initial evaluation/analysis regarding bookings or investigating practice specific issues is to:
- use the Appointment Booking History report to assess weekly or monthly activity. The data is presented at practice level. Filter the data according to need.
- look for trends in practice activity
- the Appointment Booking History report presents a view of practices with no booked appointments in the last four weeks. What might be the reason behind this trend? A discussion with identified practices may highlight issues affecting bookings.
- practices listed may need urgent support. They may also appear if they have a small list size and may not have received bookings under normal operation.
- review the number of search requests for appointments
- use the Slots Searched versus Appointments Booked report to understand the ratio of search requests against the actual number of booked appointments. This can be used to assess demand. Filter the date as needed.
There are many more reports and dashboards hosted within Power BI that can help evidence how GP Connect is being used and support an understanding of the ways in which it (GP Connect) could be used locally.
All GP Connect Power BI users have access to the Direct Care APIs Power BI Group Microsoft Teams channel. The group has approximately 400 members and is a useful forum where you can ask questions and seek support. The channel also hosts support files and a helpful webinar recording with hints and tips on using Power BI reports.
