Part of GP Practice NHS App quick guide
Features
Appointments
The practice controls the number of appointments that are available to book online and can set the maximum amount a patient can book at one time.
Make sure your patients can understand the names of appointments in the NHS App. Read about how to name appointments.
An appointment will only be visible within the NHS App if it was booked in the App or by logging in through the NHS website, unless the GP clinical system is set up to show other appointment types.
- the appointment was booked at the GP practice in person or over the phone
- your computer system is set up to only show appointments that are booked online
Prescriptions
- Your patient can order their repeat prescriptions that you have inputted into your local computer system.
- Patients cannot order acute prescriptions, but these are shown in the App
- Go to Your health.
- Select Your GP health record.
- Then select Medicines.
A repeat dispensing prescription will be visible to patients in the NHS App, however they will not be to order this as this type of prescription requires a review by the GP.
The NHS App does not support Dispense Appliance Contractor nominations.
Pharmacy
Your patients can nominate a high street pharmacy in the NHS App.
Patients must register separately for an online-only pharmacy, and cannot nominate them in the NHS App.
They cannot have both an online-only pharmacy and a high street pharmacy. If they wish to use a high street pharmacy, they must cancel the online-only pharmacy account. If they do not do this, the nominated pharmacy will always revert back to the online-only pharmacy.
If you are a dispensing practice, they will not be able to change their nominated pharmacy.
Linked profiles and proxy access
Linked profiles, also known as proxy access, lets patients access medical services for a child, or someone else they care for. Once the practice has set up proxy access, a patient can use the linked profiles feature in the NHS App.
Both patients must be registered in the same practice to have proxy access in the NHS App.
How to create a linked profile
Example: To give a mother proxy access to online services for her young daughter.
Notifications and messaging
The NHS App does not send text messages. Text messages can only be sent by the GP surgery.
Patients can choose to opt in or opt out of receiving NHS App notifications using the settings on their device. They cannot opt out of notifications for specific services.
If two people share one device and both use individual NHS App accounts, any notifications on this device will not distinguish which person has received a message in their NHS App account both users will have to open the App to see if the message is in their inbox.
