Cancer incidence by gender and age

In 2021, the 3 most common main cancer groups diagnosed in England varied by gender and age group.  

For male patients aged 0 to 14 years, the 3 most common main cancer groups are blood, brain and sarcoma, these cancer groups accounted for 77% of diagnoses. For female patients aged 0 to 14 years, the 3 most common main cancer groups are blood, brain and kidney, these cancer groups accounted for 72% of diagnoses. 

Prostate cancer was the most common cancer in adult males aged 45 years and over, while for adult males aged 15 to 44 years, blood cancers was the most common cancer group (Figure 2).  

 


Breast cancer was the most common cancer in females aged 15 years and over, accounting for 46% of cancers diagnosed in those aged 45 to 54 years, and gradually decreasing to 20% of cancers diagnosed in those aged 75 years and over (Figure 3).
