Incidence by main cancer group

The 15 most common main cancer groups cover over 90% of diagnoses if 'non-melanoma skin cancer' and 'other skin tumour'  groups are excluded and over 94% of diagnoses if 'non-melanoma skin cancer' and 'other skin tumour' groups are included.

Excluding non-melanoma skin cancer and other skin tumour groups, half (50%) of all registered cancer diagnoses continue to be found in breast, prostate, lung, or bowel. For the first time this century, there were more diagnoses of bowel cancer (41,596) than lung cancer (39,635).

Figure 1 shows the number of new diagnoses of 25 common cancers split by gender. More detailed breakdowns by type of cancer and age are available in the data tables.

Notes:

  • All ages combined.
