Key messages
- All 8 specialist PH centres covering England, Scotland and Wales took part in the 2021-22 Audit.
- At a national level, 11 of the 15 established (1) National Standards were met.
The Audit continues to provide valuable information on how pulmonary hypertension services are delivered in Great Britain. As we emerge from the pandemic people affected by pulmonary hypertension can be reassured that the majority of quality standards have been met.
Overall performance against national standards and the number of new patient referrals have now returned to pre-pandemic levels. In addition there has been a significant improvement in the percentage of people seen or discharged within 30 days of first referral compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Whilst there remains significant pressures on the NHS, the national network of pulmonary hypertension centres continue to provide a high quality service.
Since the 1st Annual Report the spectrum of pulmonary hypertension seen at referral centres has become more heterogeneous with an increase in age and comorbidities. A priority for future reports is to improve the collection of comorbidity data to allow a more accurate picture of outcomes.
Notes:
1. An “established” National Standard is defined as any National Standard that has been reported at national level in both the present (13th) and the previous (12th) Annual Reports.
