Management and Leadership Training and Development Provision Pilot: User guidance

The Management and Leadership Training and Development Provision Pilot is a new data collection to understand organisational spend on, and provision of, leadership and management development.

There is currently limited data or insight on how much organisations spend on leadership and management development, or what they offer to their employees. This new collection will help NHS England to further understand organisational activity and enable the national team to design programmes that meet local needs and address local gaps in provision, avoiding duplication at a national level.

The purpose of this pilot data collection is to understand organisational spend on, and provision of, leadership and management development.

The findings from the pilot will be used to consider the feasibility of collecting this data annually, across all NHS organisations.

The data will be used by NHS England for a variety of purposes, but primarily:

• to support the planning and development of leadership, management, and talent programmes at a national level
• to understand the impact of leadership and management development on NHS organisations

The data could also be used at a regional and system level, to support planning and development of localised provision.

The Management and Leadership Training and Development Provision Pilot data is collected on the Data Collection Framework (DCF). The DCF is a secure national data collection system hosted within the NHS England Applications platform and is already in use across the NHS to collect data from organisations that provide services to the NHS.
