Part of Clinical system migration guide

Training

Advice on training during the migration process.

Training

Training for practice staff is vital to successful migration.

Some training can only be done on the live system. So discuss, plan and agree on the most suitable training for your practice at the start of the migration.

The approach and type of training provided can differ from region to region.

Who is involved

The people, teams or organisations who might be required in this stage of the migration are:

  • practice manager
  • practice staff
  • integrated care board (ICB)
  • commissioning support unit (CSU)
  • new clinical system supplier

Training tasks

Checklist:
  • understand the training standards
  • review the training methods
  • follow the training guidelines

Understand the training standards

There is a minimum standard level of training that a supplier should provide. Details are in the training section of Digital Services for Integrated Care Capabilities (DSIC).

Review the training methods

Training can be provided in a variety of formats to suit the practice staff. You can arrange it well in advance of your go live date.

Practices get access to an eLearning module through a learning management system.

Some practices can opt for further training from their supplier. Either the ICB or the practice will pay for it.

Sometimes, CSUs will provide dedicated trainers to your practice. This is to support you before and during go live. The cost for the trainers is paid for by ICBs.

Some practices are provided with dedicated laptops for training by ICBs.

Follow the training guidelines

Before kick off:

  • book training rooms early
  • make dual monitors available, if possible

After kick off:

  • look at individual training needs
  • create a training schedule
  • book staff in
  • provide support or cover for staff during training
  • include remote or offsite staff

Agree on:

  • the practice training needs
  • a training agenda, with the trainers

After migration:

  • keep some training days for specific areas such as for Quality Outcome Framework (QoF)
  • encourage staff and clinicians to use the system to reinforce learning
  • have a list of questions ready for the trainers
