Part of Child Health Interoperability (CHI) implementation guide for health visiting services
Newborn Infant Physical Examination (72-hour NIPE)
Newborn Infant Physical Examination (72 hour NIPE)
The Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) screening programme screens newborn babies within 72 hours of birth, and then once again between 6 and 8 weeks for conditions relating to their:
- heart
- hips
- eyes
- testes
Only the 72-hour NIPE is available through NEMs interoperability and this relies on maternity units in your area using the NIPE SMART system (the majority of maternity units do). NIPE is usually carried out in hospital via maternity departments before the baby is discharged. Sometimes it is done at a hospital or community clinic, GP surgery, children's centre or at home. The aim is to spot any problems early so any necessary treatment can be started as soon as possible.
Results will be made immediately available by the health professional carrying out the examination. If the baby needs to be referred for more tests, they will discuss this with the parents.
The results will be recorded in the baby's personal child health record (redbook).
In some parts of England, Health Visiting Services, which are no longer part of an integrated Community System with a CHIS module, may no longer receive the screening information/results directly. This will create a gap in the Health Visiting clinical record, leaving the health visitor blind to whether a child has screened positive for one of the nine conditions listed above (Blood Spot Screening). This message closes those gaps.
Messages received through this release will mean that health visitor will receive NIPE results automatically when published and ingest the results into the child’s record. Health visitor systems can then flag positive results to alert health visitor to children/families needing additional support. This will improve the availability of information to clinicians and improve the decision-making/effectiveness of interventions.

What benefits can be achieved
This table has been created to help you identify the potential benefits of receiving NIPE (72 hours) screening results via NEMS. The level of benefit will depend on your current processes.
Do you currently | with NEMS | which means | What may be impacted | Possible measures before and after |
---|---|---|---|---|
Not get results in time for the new birth visit or not available in your IT system at all | You will receive NIPE screening results directly in your IT system | Not reliant on CHIS to forward results or results being keyed in/uploaded. Results will be available for new birth visit. |
Data timeliness |
Timeliness of receiving results Instances when data not available when needed |
Log on to other systems e.g. NIPE SMART system to find results | You will receive NIPE screening results directly in your IT system | No longer reliant on CHIS to forward results | Data timeliness and completeness of data |
Time taken for checking Time taken to upload Missing results |
Upload or rekey information | You will receive NIPE screening results directly in your IT system | Removes the need to re-key | Data timeliness and Completeness Effort required to record results |
Time taken to key in/upload results |
