PDS birth notification

PDS birth notification event messages are generated by the Spine and published to the NEMS when a birth is registered on PDS. The event message will contain the details of the mother, the details of the baby and some supporting information around the birth.

2. PDS birth notification messages checklist questions

These questions can be used to capture data about your services. 

  • How many staff are in the team?
  • What clinical system are you using?
  • Who processes the message and how do you process it (number of staff involved)?
  • How do you receive the message, from who and in what format?
  • How are you currently receiving births: electronically, by e-mail, via the Birth Notification App, paper, other?
  • What do you do with the data once received?
  • Data completeness/quality do you have to do any data checking/chasing? Do you receive all data required through one process? Do you have any special failsafe in place?
  • How long does it take to process the data?
  • How many messages do you receive per day?
  • Where does this information go to next?
  • Do you (ever) receive any late Births? Are you notified from other sources?
  • Are there any known PDS data issues?
  • Do you have a Service Level Agreement (SLA) for processing the data?
  • Does the service have a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)?
  • Do you have a business continuity plan?
  • Has the service got Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and reporting in place?
  • Do you complete any reports to NHSE?
  • Anticipated business impact of the change in process and potential benefit, benefits template?

4. What benefits can be achieved

This table gives the benefits of using birth notifications in NEMS.
