Female Genital Mutilation - Information Sharing (FGM IS)
Viewing an FGM Indicator
Female Genital Mutilation - Information Sharing (FGM-IS) is a national IT system that supports the early intervention and ongoing safeguarding of girls, under the age of 18, who have a family history of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
This information is available (with additional access rights) to be seen from the amber banners or patient panel in NCRS. Users can view, add or remove FGM-IS as required, with additional access rights.
Adding an FGM Indicator
1. To add an FGM indicator to a patient’s record, search for the patient then select the Demographics section in the Patient tab.
2. Select Female Genital Mutilation – Information Sharing (FGM-IS) on the left column to be presented with the screen below.
Safeguarding guidance is available on the URL above the Add button.
3. When ready, click Add FGM Information sharing indicator.
4. Enter the date in which the family history of FGM was identified, then select Confirm and add FGM indicator.
Cosmetic genital piercings and tattoos
In respect of cosmetic genital piercings and tattoos, professionals should use their individual clinical judgement when deciding whether to add an alert and rely on using their training to understand what FGM is. This may be relevant based on disclosures and identification of risk through clinical decision making.
Removing an FGM Indicator
1. To remove an FGM indicator to a patient’s record, search for the patient then select the Demographics section in the Patient tab.
2. Select Female Genital Mutilation – Information Sharing (FGM-IS) on the left column to be presented with this screen.
3. Click View FGM information sharing indicator.
4. Click Remove FGM indicator, then confirm the reason for removal of the FGM indicator before clicking Remove FGM Indicator to remove the indicator from the patient’s record.
